Durham City and Chester le Street Forum. Posts concerning the historic city of Durham City and Chester-le-Street. Durham City is a fantastic place, with the Cathedral and Castle dominating the skyline for miles around. It's also a very good place to go out on the pop. Chester-le-Street, a few miles north has an excellent market and dates from Roman times.

Is anyone aware of the existence of this magnificent bridge? It is located upriver from Finchale Priory, and carried a waggonway which connected the Leamside line with the LNER main line.

I travelled once from Fencehouses to Durham by train, and would have crossed it, but I don't remember it. I "discovered" it when birdwatching at Brasside Ponds before they built Frankland Prison, and had forgotten all about it until I found this site. I think many people will be amazed when they see it. It is barred at either end, so can't be crossed on foot.

I actually went down there on saturday for the very forst time - depsite driving up and down the a68 (and seeing signs for it) loads of times!  Very Happy
