Last night I witnessed what must have been the brightest flash of lightning I had ever seen followed almost immediately by a very load thunder clash.
Can someone explain how we had a thunderstorm whilst its snowing I didn't think you could have the two together

I'm not sure on the explanation of it but I also saw/heard thunder & lightening on New Years Eve and a few people at work say they also saw it this morning.  I find it very strange that we can have both at the same time - one of weathers strange phenomenons.

There can be thunder with any convective shower cloud, be it of hail, rain or snow. The type of precipitation doesn't matter, neither does the time of year or ambient temperature. Up there, it's all snow and ice anyway, even in summer. It's called Thundersnow and is more common than you think.

Yep I can say I saw a huge flash of lighting  over Hett Village and a almighty clash of thunder new years eve night

I thought we where in for a right snow storm

But it was just one flash and clap  and nowt else came of it .............few
