Hello.

It's been a while since my last visit, but I've been off getting married and have had lots going on at home and at work since then.

The other night, my wife and I decided to go out for a meal. Nowhere in particular, we just decided to go for a drive and stop somewhere that looked nice.

We eventually ended up at the Castle Eden inn, which you get to by coming off the A19 Southbound at the A181 and then following the road through Castle Eden village.

The place looked nice from the outside, but that's where the niceities stopped!

It took the waitress 20 minutes to come to the table to take our order, it then took another 25 minutes for the starter to arrive. I had the salmon and prawns - which was OK ,but I've had better.

We were waiting a full 40 minutes fot the main course to arrive. When my steak arrived, I found out why - the thing must have been cooking for at least that amount of time. I'd asked for it medium, but it was burned to a crisp!

My wife told me to complain, but there was no way I was going to wait another 40 minutes for another one.

I got a half hearted apology from the miserable waitress on the way out saying that one of the staff had phoned in sick. That didn't wash with me though, because it wasn't exactly busy and she was really miserable all night.

Not as miserable as me when I paid the ?37.50 bill though!  Shocked

So to summarise, it wasn't a good experience for me and has put me off the Castle Eden Inn completely!

Has anyone else been there? What did you think?

That doesn't sound too good, and that bill seems a little steep too for a meal you didn't enjoy. It should be acceptable that you can offer only a proportion of the bill depending on what the meal was like, provided you complain. If nothing is done about your complaint I would think it reasonable to only pay a proportion of the full cost of the meal.

Brits are too soft. I'm sure when this post gets indexed by Google they'll wish your experience with them was better.? Cool

Yes, you should always let the management know if your experience wasn't good.

I concur with your views on Brits being too soft, Dave. I couldn't look a waiter in the eye until I turned 30 and the only two modes I had was 'silence' and 'ballistic'  Smile Happily I now answer the waiter when they glide by and ask "How is everything' and they usually appreciate knowing if something's out of whack.

ps belated congrats on the wedding, Monsoon!

Thanks? Very Happy

And I was pretty close to complaining. I'm always a little wary about doing that in pubs and resturants though. You never know...... Plus, there's often little that can be done then and there and after waiting almost an hour for the main course, I just wanted to get out of there!

I'm a pretty good complainer though. I deal with complaint letters where I work, so I know the formula for making a complaint and getting soething out of it. So far, I've got a new (and better) digital camera from Casio. I got 33% of my wedding suits at Suits You and I recently got a full refund (in cash!) from a travel agent after they booked me into the wrong hotel for a week in Rhodes.
