Hi All,

Got to ask the question...

Whats the attraction to come to Bishop Auckland for a visit or shopping ?

The proposed complex at High Bondgate aint going to happen

The town is  at an all time low

The current market place "works" are a mess and seem to take forever to do anything

The big white elephant is now only good to you if you have bad hips , knees or eyes

and they still charge to park your car ?

Remember when Bishop Auckland was the place to shop, and walking down  looking into the centre of the town all you could see was a black mass of people covering the main drag ....  not anymore

My mam regularly visits Bishop for a couple of hours every week. She goes because the bus leaves from the top of her street, it's quick to get to and she can do what she needs to do there. She likes it, so that's that really.

Maybe  its because I worked in Bishop for ten years and never really saw the slow decline as I saw it daily

Now when I go back  ...   its a shock to see what its like now

Things have changed all over though haven't they? In the old days, we didn't have supermarkets. Independent producers weren't squeezed out of existence by these behemoths. We didn't have exotic foods from abroad, our own home produce was what we ate. Shop rents weren't driven into orbit by money grabbing landlords. Rules and regulations weren't as stringent, pretty much anyone could set up up a shop. Nowadays, a shopkeeper can't even sell his wares in the country's native, traditional unit of measure. Big business and beaurocracy rides roughshod over the little guy.

You can't compare today with yesterday, it's not a level playing field.

I sometimes do my shopping there (asda etc) - but was in the town centre last year after my car broke down (went to kwikscam) and I was sitting in the main drag eating a pasty whilst thinking about the threat of redundancy I was having at the time...whilst watching everyone do their stuff (mainly doleys) I had this thought that I could end up like them.... Shocked

that was an eye opener and a half... Sad

I've been to the Grand a few times, mostly Friday evenings, and unless you dislike karaoke and drinking somewhere where at least one of the bar people is an utter **** then you'll prob have a good time. The owner is a nice man but sadly when the cat's away...

The ER is nice if you're unfortunate to end up there and I quite like ASDA, too.

Had a look into Bishop today to visit  better halfs family

Still a dump !     thought the market place would be finished....   WRONG  doh

What a building site !

I cannot belive its taking so long  ( from my last posting about it )

I look back and think about the memories I have about Bishop,  and the bustling of the town on a Saturday, and in the back ground the noise  from the football ground  when a goal was scored or missed !

Shame how time changes everything
